Su's Workshop & Lecture Descriptions

Workshop – Untying the Mysteries of Tied-Unit Weaves

1.5-hour lecture, 3-day workshop, 2.5-hr seminar. Through lecture and hands-on weaving experience, students will learn and understand the sometimes mysterious Tied-Unit weave systems. Students will develop a working notebook of different Tied-Unit weave systems. The goal is to understand how Tied-Unit weaves work, and how they can be used to the advantage of handweavers. Intermediate-to-Advanced. Students must understand profile drafting. Students must have a strong foundation in single warp weave systems (tabby, twills, etc.) and fully understand the components of standard drafting. This class is NOT for beginners!

Workshop – Warp Painting

3-day workshop.

Same as the Beginning Warp Painting workshop with more extensive background in color theory. Instruction will include resist methods, surface design techniques, discharge, over dyeing, and hand-manipulated techniques.

In addition to protein and cellulose fibers, experimentation will be done with blends.

Workshop – You Did That on 4 Shafts?!?

2- or 3-day workshop

Learn how to weave fabric which can then be drawn and dyed to create exciting patterning on very few shafts! Loom woven shibori is an exciting technique to create very complex-looking cloth on looms with two or more shafts.

3-day workshop will include some extra surface design techniques.

Beginner level and Up.
